Fujikawaguchiko in May
Due to its elevation, spring in Fujikawaguchiko comes just a little later than the surrounding areas, and reaches full bloom in May. The days and early evenings are pleasantly warm and it is the perfect time of year for a leisurely stroll or cycle around the lake.
The Fujizakura and Shibazakura Blossom Festivals
As we get into the month of May, most of the cherry blossom trees in Japan have shed their flowers to green and get ready for the summer months. But in Fujikawaguchiko, the wild Fujizakura cherry tree, blooms in May. The petite cherry tree has blossoms of various pink hues, and can be found throughout the gardens, farms, fields and forests around Mt.Fuji. From April 25th ~ May 7th, the Fujizakura Blossom Festival is held in the forest park at the foot of Mt.Fuji. Here you can view the petite wild cherry blossom trees which are native the Mt.Fuji foothills and famous in ancient art and culture. There are festival vending stalls and you can sample free sweet rice drink and popcorn.
In the Motosuko Lake Resort area, the famous Shibazakura Festival begins from April 19th into the month of May. Many tourists and photographers from the surrounding areas come to capture the beauty of the snow capped Mt.Fuji with the gardens of pink and white in the forefront, and enjoy many local delicacies at the Mt.Fuji Food Festa talking place in the festival grounds. Enjoy over 800,000 Shibazakura flowers at the festival!
Motosuko Nobility Festival
On May 17th every year, the Motosuko Resort Area celebrates the traditional Nobility Parade and Festival. Dating back over three hundred years to the Edo Shogunate Era, the festival celebrates its history and culture. In the Edo Era, the local Daimyo would pay tribute to the ruling Shogun and motivate it’s youth to service. In the festival you can watch participants dressed in the garb of the era handling swords and spears and shouting various incantations. It is a one of a kind festival you can see only in Motosuko.
“L’hero” Vintage Bicycle Race and Festival
The recently created sister event of the famous “L’eroica” vintage bicycle race and festival in Tuscany, Italy, takes place in the beautiful Saiko Lake Resort area. The event is held on the weekend of May, 18th, with the race being held on the Sunday. Vintage bicycle enthusiasts from all around Japan and even the world, come together to celebrate the “slow” life of begotten times and the beauty and grace of the bicycle culture and in support of recently designated World Heritage of Mt.Fuji. A communal and world connecting event.
The Mt.Fuji, Kawaguchiko Film Festival
Every year, in accordance with the commemoration of Mt.Fuji Day, February 23rd, the Fujikawaguchiko Film Festival is held. The festival celebrates films produced and filmed in the Mt.Fuji area, and /or with the theme of Mt.Fuji. There is a screening and awards presentation ceremony. Why not enjoy seeing the beautiful areas which you recognize around Mt.Fuji and enjoy Japanese film culture to support the upkeep of the recently designated World Heritage Mt.Fuji.
