To bring in the new year, it is possible to view the spectacular “diamond” Mt. Fuji from the local viewpoint in Motosuko. The special phenomena where the rise or setting of the sun concurs at the peak of Mt.Fuji, resulting in a brilliant shine like a diamond from the heights of the sacred mountain. Although diamond Fuji sunrise can be viewed more or less from a few points in Fujikawaguchiko town, the view from dragon mountain in Motosuko at sunrise is the most famous and recommended, especially to bring in the new year. Every year many people begin the pre-dawn ascent from Motosuko lake campground parking area, to meet the first sunrise of the New year as the spectacular “diamond Fuji” sunrise. Please give it a try.

As Fujikawaguchiko town lies 830-902m above sea level, the heart of winter brings a deep cold. But this refreshing coldness allows one to feel that heart of winter, which offers its own beauty. For the last ten years, at Oike park, the Kawaguchiko winter fireworks have provided the chance to capture this beauty of winter. From July 16 to February 21st, every Saturday and Sunday evening, the Kawaguchiko winter fireworks will be held. From 8pm, there will be 20minutes of intense fireworks dancing on the clear and still Lake. In the Oike park parking area, there will be winter stalls providing hot food and drink and a festive atmosphere. Another wonderful option is to view the fireworks from the comfort a lakeside hotel room or hot spring. For hotels from which you can view the fireworks, please contact the tourist information center (TEL 0555-72-0346 0555-72-2460).For general inquiries please contact the Fujikawaguchiko Sightseeing Board (TEL 0555-72-3168).

From the middle of January to the beginning of February, the temperature drops low enough for the beauty of the Kawaguchiko and Saiko ice festival to correspond with the winter fireworks. The joint ice festival has taken place since the merger of Saiko and Kawaguchiko areas into Fujikawaguchiko town in recent years. The Saiko ice festival place is at the Wild Birds Forest Sanctuary park. Various ice shapes and sculptures as well as local seasonal delicacies like salted grilled fish can be enjoyed there. At Kawaguchiko, from January 30th to February 7,the sight close to Oike park corresponds to the fireworks area, and offers hanging tree ice sculptures which makes you feel you are in a winter forest wonderland. The winter beauty is enhanced by the lighting up of the ice sculptures and trees at night. Please enjoy the winter beauty at your pace.

February 23rd is Mt. Fuji day. In Japanese, the character “FU” means 2, and “JI” means 3. Thus “FUJI” translates to February 23rd, where we celebrate the sacred Mt.Fuji with the seasons final fireworks. Come and enjoy the wonderful event and celebrate Mt.Fuji!

As Mt. Fuji is the symbolically the cultural heartbeat of Japan, the annual Mt.Fuji / Kawaguchiko movie festival will be held on Mt. Fuji day, February 23rd. The two parts of the movie festival will include the screening of the film contest winner which is themed in the Mt.Fuji / Kawaguchiko area and aims to the cultural heights of Mt. Fuji; and discussions about film technique and the muse of Mt.Fuji in the area of film, video and screenplay. The 2nd annual film scenario contest winner “Little, Big Mt. Fuji,” a heartwarming family picture will be shown during the 20th and 21st of the film festival days before Mt.Fuji day, with various other events taking place.

Winter is, as you would expect, also the season of snow and ice. Although the air temperature is low, snow doesn’t fall all that often. However even if it falls just once, it just won’t melt away. During January and February, the time of year with the highest probability of clear weather, you can enjoy the Mount Fuji Snowscape to your hearts content.Whether it is from the lake edge, a local hiking route, a traditional Japanese hotel, or just about anywhere, you can enjoy the wonderful view of Mount Fuji. But the absolutely ideal place to view Mount Fuji from is the snow scenery of Iyashinosato; A traditional Japanese thatch roof village, rebuilt using traditional methods after it was tragically destroyed in a mud slide half a century ago.
Of course being winter, the full range of winter sports such and skiing and ice-skating etc. are available.
For those traveling by car, please remember that the snowy and icy roads are extremely slippery, and studless tires and chains must be fitted to ensure a save trip for yourself and others on the roads.
There are still countless hidden locations to explore. In Aokigahara woodland in the Lake Saiko area, is Saiko Kōmoriana (The Bat Cave). To ensure no lasting damage is done to the bats natural habitat, the cat cave itself is not open to the public from the first of December to the 19th of March, however the gallery and nature tours of Aokigahara woodland run 7 days a week throughout the year. From 2006, the gallery has been extended and of course there are a variety of displays from which you can learn all about bats and Aokigahara woodland, but a feature of the gallery you wouldn’t expect to be there is the tribute to Batman; from which they borrowed the “The Bat Cave” name is borrowed from. Furthermore is the cafeteria, where you can find Saiko’s udon noodles, a specialty of the area, and a favorite among tourists. Also, in the lakeside Ōishi Park is “Mount Fuji Gathering” monument, which is worth a visit. This monument is made from rocks gathered from “Gotōchifuji”, which are scattered across the country (Mountains which look like Mount Fuji are collectively known as Gotōchifuji). Built from 252 stones, from 226 mountains, near 228 cities, towns and villages ranging from Hokkaidō in the north to Okinawa in the south, this monument was erected on Mount Fuji day in 2003 to represent peace and friendship across the country. When viewing this monument you can truly appreciate how much Mount Fuji is a part of the Japanese soul.
But rather than reading about it, why not come to Fujikawaguchiko Town and appreciate it for yourself?
