Tsutsuguchi Shrine

“Tsutsuguchi” literally means the hole where suck the water from Lake Kaguchi with whirls. “Tutusuguchi” was believed that it sucked fisherman or woman who was getting water and didn’t let them come back. It was called “Devil Tutuguchi” and scared the villager. People enshrine the god of water for prevension of distress and disaster and named “Tsutuguchi Myoujin”.

Note1: “Tutsuguchi” literally means the hole where suck the water from Lake Kaguchi with whirls. “Tutusuguchi” was believed that it sucked fisherman or woman who was getting water and didn’t let them come back. It was called “Devil Tutuguchi” and scared the villager. People enshrine the god of water for prevension of distress and disaster and named “Tsutuguchi Myoujin”. At the same time, people made a stopper of the whirl water by filling the hole with pine tree pieces.
Note2: Front shrine was built in March 1469, and Ugetu shrine pavilion was built in 1565. The name of the shrine was given in 1756.
The shrine and Hachioji shrine carries out annual celebration by turns. Portable shrine and daimyo’s procession are held in the celebration.
Note3: In 1504, the lake was greatly swollen because of big rainfall. Owari Kobayashi, a lord of Funatu area, carried away the Pine wood from “Tsutsuguchi” hole. Pieces from oblations which were stuck in the hole were cleared out by that and then the water start running again with whirl. The swollen water of the lake got lower after that.
