Katsuyama Horseback Archery Festival

The festival, with a history of over 900 years begins with the traditional ceremony for good fortune in battle - a ceremony that tells of the bravery of the samurai of feudal Japan. The ceremony ends in a dramatic display of real archery from horseback. At the sound of the drums, the horses dash forward, kicking sand into the air. The archer aims and fires in an impressive display of marksmanship. This spectacular finale is like something from the picture scrolls of the warring state period of Japan.

Note1
The festival has a history dating back over 900 years, which began with the ceremony for good fortune in battle - the "Go Sannen no Eki". Since then, the festival has been taking place in the Katsuyama area. In 1897, the festival ceased to be performed. But it was revived in 1980. Now Katsuyama's horseback archery festival is held in "Takeda style YABUSAME" every year.
